The Unlimited tailgate enclosure works in the 4-door model with the rear seat & the 2-door model with the rear seat removed. This all steel cargo enclosure is our simplest four-piece design yet that creates a lockable storage area completely protected on all sides. In comparison with our #275 JK deck enclosure, the top is fixed and outfitted with tie-down anchors. It does not rotate open but instead can be removed for storage of taller items. It works in conjunction with the lockable vehicle tailgate to secure the area created. The enclosure maintains the use and function of the rear seat in 4-door models and will work in 2-door models with the rear seat removed providing Tuffys largest secure cargo area available for the 2-door JK. This jumbo sized enclosure quickly installs in both the 4 & 2-door Jeep JK models with an OEM hardtop or softtop. It will work in vehicles equipped with or without the subwoofer and functions with the OEM storage cover or the Tuffy Cubby Cover, part #143. The lid removes without the use of hand tools to allow for storage of large or tall items. Patent Pending. On vehicles with power door locks, arming the security alarm disables the power door lock switches and ensures the tailgate and Tuffy enclosure are secure, even on softtop models or with the top removed. On the 2-door models, additional hardware (not supplied) and drilling is required to install the front panel to the floor.
Installed this a few days ago and am overall satisfied. I think though the design could be a bit better. A previous design which I've seen has the front and top pieces as two separate pieces which are bolted together once in the Jeep. The current design is one large piece connected via a hinge, which makes installing and removing much more difficult. You'll only want to purchase this if you only plan to install it and leave it, with rarely ever taking it out. It isn't an easy process to remove or install due to its one-piece design, size, and weight. The other issue with it is that the factory cargo floor mat won't fit under the front panel which is bolted to the floor. This design reuses the factory cargo bolts to hold it, and the bolts just aren't long enough to accommodate the added thickness of the mat. I'm going to have to pick up a couple longer bolts so that I can continue to use the factory cargo mat. I wish that they had just provided new bolts to use to accommodate it. Other than those issues, this product is very well built. I have no concern that this will protect what is inside of it. The only way someone is getting in is if I either leave the Jeep unlocked, or they have a blowtorch to cut a hole.
For work I travel quite a bit and have to carry computer equipment. However, I still want to be able to take off my top in the summer time. This product strikes a fair price without sacrificing your security. It would take significant time to bust into this unit; so I think it would deter most any thief, unless they just steal your entire Jeep. Installation was quick and easy. It took me about an hour to read the directions and assemble the unit together. It is very helpful to have an extra person on stand by to help you install in the back of your Jeep. If you aren't careful with the sharp edges you can scratch up your top on the inside. Lastly, an extra set of hands is necessary to install the last four carriage bolts. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and the ease of installation. The one con is that this unit would be a pain to take in and out all the time, however I don't intend to ever remove it.
To be honest when the UPS guy delivered this I almost refused it as I have used Tuffy products for years and was expecting something burly and welded. Even when i unpacked it felt flimsy and I guess my experience with other Tuffy products made me simply expect more. I decided to go ahead and install it anyway since I waited so long for it to arrive and really had a need for some lockable storage when the top was down. After finishing the install ( less than an hour by myself) I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually like it. It looks good and does the job well. I only have a couple complaints and they are pretty minor. One is that you have to reuse 2 torx head bolts. Normally I wouldn't care but because of the angle of the steel on this it's nearly impossible to use a drill or impact with a torx bit to re-install these two screws without stripping them out. My other complain is I wish the lid was easier to remove when you wanted to haul something big, put the dog in the back, etc. All in all I am happy with the value in what I got for the money. It does a nice job, looks good, and didn't cost a fortune
While this particular product is actually way cheaper than a number of other STORAGE "options," if truth be told, if your Jeep is only a 2-door, it WILL require you to totally REMOVE your back seat, thus converting your Wrangler to a 2-passenger only vehicle! However! IF your Wrangler is a 4-door model, this would NOT be a "concern" for you! Bottom line? IF your JEEP is 4-door model, I'd definitely recommend it. However. IF your Jeep Wrangler is, like mine, only a 2-door model, I would definitely NOT recommend it! WHY? Because, in order to install this device in a 2-door Wrangler, one would need to permanently and forever remove one's back seat! Yet, if one owns a 4-door model, this would NOT be an issue!
This is an awesome add-on if you drive your Jeep around town with anything valuable in it. It's totally secure, and looks great. I can now drive with my top off without having to carry all my wife's purchases from store to store. :) It's also great for off-roading storage, but NOT your recovery gear since you need to open the tailgate to get at anything. The install was the easiest thing I've put on my Jeep yet. A few bolts, wing nuts, and some rubber edging - done. It took about 10 minutes.
Will this tailgate enclosure work with the rear seat recline kit installed? I know the deluxe enclosure will not but from the reviews I've read on this one there's about a 3" gap between this enclosure and the rear seats.
Asked by Joe from TX on
Joe, the Tuffy Security Tailgate Enclosure will indeed have a gap behind it and allow you to recline the seats. Hope this helps!
