After getting larger tires (who doesn't!) I needed something to carry the spare. I wanted it on the back to balance the rig and the look. I tried 3 different swing-away models which worked but, by design they could not stop flopping around on rough roads because of the distance from the rig. I had good swing-away latches that held strong and didn't rattle, but the tire is simply too heavy to stay still when mounted to any swing-away style. I worried that eventually they would start to wiggle themselves apart. When TeraFlex came up with this model, I knew they finally had what I needed. I ordered it when it first became available and it has no signs or sounds of ANY movement whatsoever. I don't even think about it anymore, except how great it makes my Rubicon look. Pricey but very well constructed! Looks good - don't even notice it isn't stock. Big advantage of this over a rear bumper/tire carrier to me is 1) the tire and tailgate still open together and 2) it allows me to choose any rear bumper at any time. Easy to install - took a little over an hour.
I purchased a 2012 Wrangler off the showroom floor at a dealer who added large after-market tires and wheels as well as a MOPAR parts lift kit. The heavy weight of the large wheels/tires caused the spare on the rear gate with weak OEM hinges to rattle constantly on the pot-hole ridden streets of metro Wash, DC, to the extent that I was going nuts, This is a solid piece of engineering which totally solves that problem. It is very easy to install as long as you read the instructions carefully. They are very good BTW and very detailed. Installation looks obvious, but it does require removing both factory hinges (10 bolts), and it is essential that you follow the instructions about leaving bolts slightly loose until everything is lined up properly when all bolts are installed. Wood blocks cut to the right thickness between gate and bumper to preserve the gate alignment are also a must. But, it really is very simple to install, and I'm not a talented do it your-selfer, but did it in less than 90 minutes once I had all tools and supplies at the ready. Read the instructions several times and follow every step, and it will install perfectly. My Jeep is completely rattle-free for the first time! I couldn't be more delighted with this product, which is worth every penny.
Would recommend for any one using a large spare that does not want the extra weight or silly looks of aftermarket bumpers.
Amazing product, easy to install and gets the job done perfectly. No need to buy an expensive after market bumper. Just slap it on. So easy to do. it looks clean and more imporantly is solid. No more creaking, no more fear of opening my tailgate. I could not be happier.
