I bought this rack for a 1988 Wrangler. Shipping was quick and well packaged. The tubing is very strong and the finish is excellent. Instaling took two days as the screws for the upper windshield mount are almost imnpossible to reach and had to have a wrench as a back-up. Once installed there was a 9 inch gap between the rear bumper upright and the front portion of the rack. It took a lot of pushiing and pulling plus some bending to get them together. Once together there was heck to pay if I ever wanted to take them apart agein. Which is when I found out the top two side rails are either side specific or end for end specific for the cross bars! (Not mentioned in the instructions) I had to re-drill all the holes to get the cross bars attached. I thought the instructions were marginal at best and had to use some of my own nuts and washers. Once installed the rack looks great and is solid.
can the defender racks work with this for the wrangler yj?
Asked by Jordan from MD on
Hi Jordan, This Smittybilt SRC Roof Rack isn't for use on the Smittbilt defender rack, which is designed to fit directly on your hard top. You'll need to fabricate a mount system to fit the defender on this rack. Thanks for your inquiry.

I know this might be a dumb question, but once installed how difficult is to remove your tops? I figured my soft top would be simple but does it allow enough room to slide my hard top in and out from the rear? Thanks, Luis
Asked by Lou the Butcher from United States on
Lou, The only thing that needs removed from the Smittybilt SRC Roof Rack to install or remove your top would be the three cross bars. Once those are off you can easily change out the tops. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
