Looks decent, price is cheap, but you get what you pay for. The grease fitting lasted one day, it rattles like crazy going down the road, and the slide in hitch receiver is loose as a goose. I thought it was my slide in, but everyone's I have tried fits the same. I guess I'll have to make some shims...
Bumper was well built but lacked details. Would have preferred a smooth finish as opposed to the crackle look. Hard to clean. Latch rattled inside housing. Removed latch and covered with heat shrink, greased and replaced. Solved rattle. Tire still shakes going down the road rubber block provided did not reach any part of tailgate. Tire blocks view out of inside mirror and sits a lot higher than stock mount. Wish I had read reviews first would not have bought.
The bumper width aligns best with a CJ which makes it too narrow for a TJ and leaves your corners unprotected. It is a heavy gauge steel but the corners are open towards the front and will catch everything the tires throw at them, expect it to rust. Grease fitting must be removed in order to open the tailgate. Latch rattles, you will have to jerry rig something or tie it to the tailgate with a flexible joint. A 33" tire is 6+ inches over the top of the bumper placing the tire way too high and blocking most of your rear view. I'm sure this adds some unnecessary stress at the pivot joint. I would call this a good entry level bumper for a CJ but for my LJ I have some major buyers remorse.
Nice design. Well painted. All hardwear was in box.instructions needed to be a little better on the photo pictures, could hardly make out some of the pics. Other than that good bumber.
Pros: The construction and finish is great, very heavy and durable. Looks tough too with those big D rings hanging off the back. Cons: Tire mount could be a bit lower for my taste. The hinge bolt flange interferes with the tailgate hinge (grinding required). The grease fitting will be knocked off by the tailgate (removed and replaced with a bolt to just clear it). Kit was missing the frame tie ins, several nut threads did not match bolt threads (had to run out to get the right ones). Removing the gas tank to install is required for inner bolts. Even with the bump-stop installed, it rattles. A body lift may cure some of the clearance issues with the hinge. Maybe a good starter bumper and tire carrier for the price, but be prepared for some driveway modifications. Recommended but be ready.
The bumper was a little hard to install, but it is sturdy and fits my needs.
Installed in 1977 CJ7. Required drilling 8 new holes in rear cross member. The tabs on the bottom of the bumper designed to bolt on the rear shackle mounts are in the wrong place for a CJ. I had to cut them off grind them down approx. 1/8 inch on each side to fit in my HD currie shackle mounts, then re-weld them on after fitting the bumper. I am very happy with the end result. Another problem is the tire mount extra part they want you to buy to mount the tire because of the 5x5.5 mounting pattern of a CJ. It is very well made, but when you mount it, it makes the tire not touch any part of the "triangle" swing away. This is because a CJ requires 3.5 inches of back spacing on the tire rim. The adapter is approx. 4 inches long. so the tire is almost 4" away from the upright. Still solid, but...
Very nice bumper!Instalation was a little timely,but not hard.You do have to drop the tank but its not that big of deal.It is a very well built and good looking bumper.Bought it for the tire carrier and the hitch.Towed a pop-up camper to the Outer banks from Ohio with no problems.
Replaced an aging Warn bumper that rusted out with the Smittybilt one. Installation was straight forward and easy once the old bumper was removed. The issue is the grease fitting is on top of the spindle. When you open the tire carrier and then the tailgate fully the tail gate snaps off the grease fitting. Come on Smittybilt! Now I carry the grease fitting (they actually had a spare one as they must know something!!) when I need to grease it. Like the value and overall components, Good fit and finish for a product made in [*].
The bumper and tire carrier are beefy. Mine doesn't rattle, and has a good overall fit on the rear of the Jeep. The biggest con is the installation. There are plates that go behind the frame to give the bumper more stability. The plates need to be about 1/16 inch shorter on the inside to give you room to adjust the bumper enough to start the mounting bolts. The way the plates are now, they fit so tight there is no wiggle room and the bolt holes will not line up. I took about 1/16 off the end with an angle grinder and everything mounted up without issue after that.
Is this a tow-rated bumper, or is the receiver merely an accessory holder?

I have a 1979 cj7 with 15" Mickey Thompson wheels. The lug pattern my wheels are about 1/2 " bigger than the two lugs on your product that are closest together. What do I do. Do you sell another lug pattern. I'm very disappointed because this has had to happen to others and I would think you would have other slip on mounting brackets. Please let me know what to do.
