Dave, the Smittybilt Chrome Grille Inserts for Jeep TJ & LJ Wrangler does not interfere with the hood at all. These go down behind the grille. I hope this helps!

If you sand and prepare them properly, we don't see any reason why you couldn't spray paint these Smittybilt Grille Inserts. Thanks!

Hello! These grille inserts do not have any type of mesh or webbing in the openings. They are more of a decorative item than a protective one.
