The frameless soft top installs over the original equipment factory roll bar for a snug fit without the need for additional bows. This unique design allows room for larger windows and improved visibility with removable side and rear windows that quickly zipper out to transform into a safari top. Windows use a heavy-duty zipper and store inside a special separation panel between the ceiling and rooftop that is concealed. Note: requires windshield header, factory door surrounds and tailgate bar.
Like the other reviews, the top is EXTREMELY difficult to install initially, particularly the rear window-even after allowing it to "loosen" up at 90 degrees for a few hours! During the third removal of the rear window, the zipper tore-I DID say it was tight. I called and after sending pix, was given another rear window, what I didn't notice was that the zipper on the left side of the rear window-on the side panel-had torn also. I just used it as a Bimini top until I re-installed the HT. VERY noisy at 50+ in the front. I will NOT re-install it again, just chalk it up to a bad experience. I did not experience the "sag" others speak of. Actually very well made, just too damn tight!
The first time you install it, it take a while. you have to stretch out the top, adjust it, re stretch, adjust again, etc. It was right around the 70 degree mark so i had to run the heater to help soften the material. After the first time it is simple to adjust. Since i have an 05 LJ, I wish the top would come in more colors than just black. Also, i believe because of the curved end caps on the required windshield channel there is a ton of wind noise at the front cover. I am used to wind noise in a jeep soft top, just not from the front corners.
The fact that it is cheap is great but I wish I went with some better built. Forget about folding the back and sides in on itself because you would have some major sag. I ended up putting my own cross beams in the back just to tighten it up. Also hooks that connect the top to the rear dont fit well and I have had to bang them in. It is also extremely noisy, even for a Jeep. Just the safari top is great however and that works great. If you can keep you Jeep indoors with just the top on it isn't bad. Still, you have to be careful with it and make sure everything is in place when putting it together.
As other review states, top has no give when first purchased. Over time, like all tops, lots of sag. Nylon straps are cheap and mine broke( all three for the back window, the center roll bar to footman loop and the 2 rear straps. Luckily I have a good seamstress in the family and replaced them with 1" standard webbing. Side windows do not fit into "storage compartment" on top. You must fold them to fit...that or I haven't found out the proper way. I do enjoy the fact when you take the back and side windows off, you bass icily have a safari top.
What happened to the concept for a top that comes down in dry weather, and goes up in wet (or cool)weather? I had hoped that this top would be flexible enough to easily put it on when needed. I can barely get it installed at 80 degrees in direct sunlight. It may stretch a bit, but I am very disappointed in the installation process and the overall design, especially installing the top into the windshield channel. This is not the top to carry in the back of the Jeep and expect to put it on when rain is threatening, etc. Materials and craftsmanship are very good - too bad it can't be used like the older Jeep tops.
