The quick answer is: Put a jack under the transmission/transfer case skid plate. Remove all of the bolts holding the skid plate in place. Lower the jack and skid plate Put spacers between skid plate and frame Use new bolts to tighten back up. It's not to bad of a job at all.

Is this a big enough drop to stop the banging.I got a 4.5 inch lift on a 200o jeep cherokee. if not what size drop.

I don't know exactly what suspension system you are running. But if you have a 4.5" lift on a XJ with no t-case drop this sure isn't going to hurt your driveshaft any. It would be a step in the right direction to getting rid of the banging drive shaft.
