Hello Tim, The outside ring is a slotted nut. Simply unplug the switch and loosen the nut and the switch will come out. Hope that helps.

How do I adjust the length of the switch? What tool should I use? The switch is too long and the mounting portion needs to be adjusted so that it does not stick out so far that the door knocks it out of place.

Hi Matt! The dome light switch should have a depth collar on it that allow you to adjust how shallow or far out it rests once installed. You should be able to adjust it by hand, but you may need some pliers if it was very snug after it was manufactured.
