Manual transmissions allow you to have direct control over your Jeep's gears, making off-roading and traveling backwoods trails a much simpler affair. They also have several different parts that automatic transmission don't, and typically require a bit more maintenance over the years to keep things running smoothly. One of these parts is the Jeep clutch slave cylinder, which you simply cannot change gears without. In order to keep moving forward during those off-road adventures you have planned, you'll need to properly maintain this part.
The Jeep clutch slave cylinder works alongside your ride's clutch master cylinder when you press the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch itself, and makes using your transmission possible. The master cylinder receives the pressure created when you press the pedal, and extends it to the external slave cylinder, which in turn extends a rod that presses against a lever designed to disengage the clutch. If the slave cylinder doesn't register pressure, can't extend the rod far enough or misses the clutch, you'll be unable to change gears while you're on the move.
Signs You Should Get a Replacement
Because the clutch slave cylinder plays such a huge role in any manual transmission, a failing one is fairly simple to identify. Some of the issues you should keep an eye out for regarding your Dorman clutch slave cylinder include abnormal tenseness or slack in your clutch pedal, contaminated or low brake fluid and leaks beneath your Jeep when it's parked.
